A fever is a sign of a working immune system, not always an emergency. Here’s how to think about it: any fever in a baby under 3 months means a same-day call. For older kids, focus less on the number and more on how they’re acting — drinking, peeing, smiling between dips.
The 3-question test
- Is your child drinking and peeing normally?
- Are they alert and engaging when the fever drops?
- Are there other red flags — stiff neck, trouble breathing, persistent vomiting, severe headache?
If yes-yes-no, you can usually wait it out with fluids and rest. If anything else, call us — we’d rather hear from you and reassure than have you wonder.
When to skip the call and head straight to the ER
Difficulty breathing, blue lips, seizures, unresponsiveness, or fever with a stiff neck — call 911 or go to your nearest pediatric ER.
