There is no one right way to get a newborn to sleep — but there are a handful of things that genuinely help, and a lot of “wisdom” that can wait. Here’s how we coach the first 12 weeks at Sunny Pediatrics.
The boring fundamentals
- Back to sleep, every sleep, until 12 months.
- Firm flat surface, no blankets/pillows/loose anything in the crib.
- Room-share without bed-share for the first 6 months.
- Fed (full belly) + warm + calm = your highest-yield routine.
- Daylight by day, dim and quiet by night — even at 3 weeks.
Things you don’t have to figure out alone
If feeding is hurting, if your baby is up every 45 minutes around the clock past week 8, or if you (the parent) are struggling — bring it up at the next visit. Sleep, feeding, and parental mood are all part of pediatric care.
